What are the best games like Alto's Adventure?
If you love Alto's for its weather and calm downhill flow, start with its sequel, Alto's Odyssey; if you want weather you control and stages you can actually finish, try RushOrb: Storm Atlas, which we make. Both Alto games cost $4.99 with no ads, and RushOrb is free with no ads.
Alto's Adventure made a lot of us care about a sky. Blizzards, thunderstorms and fog roll over a snowboarder who never stops, and the listing promises 180 handcrafted goals on top of an endless ride. The weather is gorgeous, and it is something you look at. That is the line this page draws: games where weather sets the mood, and one game where weather is the steering wheel.
Alto's weather sets the mood. RushOrb's weather is the steering wheel.

What the slider shows
The left half is how weather works in most beautiful runners: snow drifts across the screen and nothing about the road changes. The right half is the same chasm after you call Frost in RushOrb. The ghost bridge freezes solid and locks your orb onto rails, and it only holds while Frost stays called. That is the whole idea of the game, and it is the honest difference from Alto. You trade some of the meditative flow for a decision every few seconds.
If the sky is the reason you play, stay with Alto. If you wish you could touch the sky, try RushOrb.
How to cross your first Frost Bridge, in 3 steps
A visual guide to the moment Alto players usually fumble in their first RushOrb run.
Read the painted walls
Storm Walls are curtains of weather across the track, and they only part for the weather they are painted with. Look for the colour early, the way you read a cliff edge in Alto.
Call Frost before the chasm
Frost Bridges are ghostly ice over open gaps. Call Frost with your second thumb before you reach one, and keep it called until you are across. Switch too soon and the bridge goes back to ghost.
Light three beacons, reach the gate
Each stage awards up to three sparks: reach the gate, light every beacon, and beat the stage's own challenge, such as crossing two Frost Bridges. 108 sparks finish the Atlas.
Read, call, hold: three moves that turn a pretty storm into a plan.
Questions Alto's players ask
What is the closest game to Alto's Adventure?
Its own sequel, Alto's Odyssey, by the same studio. It keeps the one-touch trick controls and swaps snow for desert dunes, adds sandstorms, wall riding and a Zen Mode. Both are $4.99 on the App Store with no ads or in-app purchases.
Is Alto's Adventure endless?
Yes. The App Store listing describes procedurally generated terrain you ride until you fall, with 180 handcrafted goals layered on top. There are no stages to finish.
Are there games like Alto's Adventure that are free?
RushOrb: Storm Atlas, which we make, is free with no ads and no account. It has optional purchases: RushOrb Plus Monthly $2.99, RushOrb Plus Yearly $19.99, Founder Bundle $7.99, Cosmic Orb Pack $1.99, Trail Pack $1.99, Neon Orb Pack $1.99 and Full World Pack $2.99. The listing says these are for style and bonus rewards, never for clearing stages.
Does RushOrb have a zen mode like Alto's Odyssey?
No. Every RushOrb stage asks you to read the road and make weather calls, so it is never fully hands-off. If a no-score, no-fail ride is what you want, Alto's Odyssey's Zen Mode is the better pick.
Is Alto's Odyssey: The Lost City the same game?
It is a separate edition of Alto's Odyssey for Apple Arcade, which launched in July 2021. You need an Apple Arcade subscription to play it.
Can I play RushOrb offline on a plane?
Yes. The listing promises full offline play, no ads and no account, and the download is 9.4 MB.
Who RushOrb is not for
- Zen riders. If the best part of Alto is drifting without a score, Alto's Odyssey's Zen Mode removes scores, coins and power-ups. RushOrb has nothing like it.
- Trick-combo lovers. Backflips, grinds and wall rides chained across a dune are Alto's craft. RushOrb's skill is reading weather walls, not tricks.
- Players who never want a shop. The Alto games are paid up front with no in-app purchases. RushOrb is free with optional purchases: RushOrb Plus Monthly $2.99, RushOrb Plus Yearly $19.99, Founder Bundle $7.99, Cosmic Orb Pack $1.99, Trail Pack $1.99, Neon Orb Pack $1.99 and Full World Pack $2.99.
- One-hand players. RushOrb steers with one thumb and calls weather with the other. On a crowded train with one hand free, a one-touch game is kinder.
One design decision we made
We wanted weather that answers you. So every storm in RushOrb is tied to a road object: walls you part, bridges you freeze, glass you melt. The cost is calm: you will never zone out in RushOrb the way you can on an Alto dune at dusk. We think that trade is worth it for some players, not all of them.
Pick the game whose weather you want: one to admire, or one to use.
