When should you prestige in an idle game?
Prestige when your progress has slowed right down and the reset would at least double your multiplier; before that, keep buying. That one rule covers most idle games, from Cookie Clicker's ascension to AdVenture Capitalist's Angel Investors to the IPO Reset in our own Cash Empire Clicker.
The reason is the shape of the curve. Early in a run, income climbs fast and every purchase matters. Later, each new asset costs far more than the last and the line flattens. That flat stretch is where a reset pays: you trade a slow hour for a fast restart with a permanent bonus.
Flat line, big multiplier: reset. Steep line, small multiplier: keep tapping.
The first reset we got wrong
Our first time testing an early build of Cash Empire, one of us hit IPO Reset after about ten minutes because the button glowed and it felt like the next thing to do. The multiplier went from x1.0 to x1.1. Getting back to the same stage took longer than the whole first run. Then, a few days later, the opposite: an empire left grinding for two days on a flat line, for a reset that could have happened on day one.
That is why the game now shows your multiplier NOW vs AFTER before you confirm. It is one design decision we feel strongly about: a reset you cannot see the result of is a guess, and idle games should not be guessing games.
Prestige tips for beginners
- Wait for the first real wall. Your first reset should come when the next asset is hours away, not minutes.
- Aim for at least double. If AFTER is not at least twice NOW, a few more purchases usually get it there faster than a reset would.
- Spend the permanent currency right away. In Cash Empire, Investors buy permanent upgrades. Unspent, they do nothing.
- Reset before you sleep, not after. A fresh run climbs fastest at the start, and offline earnings keep it climbing overnight.
- Check what resets. In Cash Empire, the Research Lab notes that research resets on an IPO. Don't pour your last cash into research right before a reset.
| You see | Do this |
|---|---|
| Next asset in under 10 minutes | Keep buying |
| AFTER is less than 2x NOW | Keep buying |
| Income has stalled for an hour, AFTER is 2x or more | Reset |
| About to put the phone down for the night | Reset if close, then let offline earnings work |
Who this advice is not for
If you are pushing leaderboards in a mature idle game, the rule of thumb is too blunt: those players model exact reset timings and use game-specific formulas, and community wikis will serve you better. And if you just want something to tap while a show is on, ignore all of this. Prestiging late costs you nothing but time, and time is the one thing an idle game is happy to take.
What the 20-second run shows
The toy at the top compresses a whole run into twenty seconds. Your income climbs fast, then the next printer gets expensive and the line flattens. The meter fills as your lifetime cash grows, the same way the Investor count builds in Cash Empire. Reset on a flat line with a big AFTER number and the next run starts with that multiplier already applied: the cash counter visibly races.

- 11 managers that automate and multiply your assets
- 15 empire stages, from Broken Printer to Omniversal Treasury

Honest limit: our toy uses made-up numbers to show the shape of the decision. The real game's multipliers, costs and Investor maths differ.

The game is free, with no forced ads, no launch paywall and no subscription. Optional one-time purchases (the Premium purchase and Founder Lifetime) add permanent cash multipliers, longer offline earnings and skins; the listing says everything can be earned by playing free.
Prestige questions
What does prestige mean in an idle game?
Prestige is a voluntary reset. You give up your current cash and buildings in exchange for a permanent bonus that makes every future run faster. Games name it differently: Angel Investors, ascension, IPO Reset.
When should I prestige for the first time?
When your progress has slowed to a crawl and the reset would at least double your current multiplier. Before that, keep buying: an early reset throws away more than it earns.
Is it bad to prestige too early?
Usually it just wastes time rather than ruining anything. You rebuild to the same spot with only a small bonus. Too late is the more common beginner mistake: hours of tiny gains you could have skipped.
How often should I prestige?
Each reset should take you noticeably further than the last before it slows. A common pattern is short, frequent resets early, then longer runs as permanent upgrades stack up.
How does prestige work in Cash Empire Clicker?
It is called the IPO Reset. Before you confirm, the game shows your multiplier NOW and AFTER. You earn Investors and spend them on permanent upgrades. Research also resets on an IPO, as the in-game Research Lab card notes.
Do I lose everything when I prestige?
You lose the run: cash, assets and run upgrades. You keep the permanent currency (Investors in Cash Empire) and whatever it buys. Achievements and player level generally stay.
