What are good games like Subway Surfers for kids?

Look for a runner rated for your child's age, with no ads, no loot boxes, purchases behind Ask to Buy, and a clear finish line so a session can end. We make RushOrb: Storm Atlas, a 4+ rolling-orb runner with 36 stages and no ads, so we are biased. That is why every comparison below comes from the App Store listings themselves, checked in November 2026, and why we name a non-RushOrb option too.

Short version: the speed kids love is easy to find; the parent-friendly settings are not.

RushOrb's purchases, exactly as the listing shows them: RushOrb Plus Monthly $2.99, RushOrb Plus Yearly $19.99, Founder Bundle $7.99, Cosmic Orb Pack $1.99, Trail Pack $1.99, Neon Orb Pack $1.99 and Full World Pack $2.99. None of them is needed to clear a stage.

Who RushOrb is not for

A guided tour: what your kid will actually see

Three store screenshots, annotated by us. The numbers match the notes under each one.

RushOrb run on a snowy track with a stage bar, weather buttons and a Lift button123
  1. A stage bar, not a score chase. “Stage 1-2, 31 m to the gate” tells your child how close the end is.
  2. Weather buttons. Frost and Blaze sit on the right thumb; tap one to change the track.
  3. Drag anywhere to steer. No tiny lanes to hit, which helps small hands.
RushOrb weather guide explaining Frost, Blaze and Gale plus Storm Walls and Frost Bridges45
  1. Three weathers, explained in plain words. Frost freezes bridges, Blaze melts glass gates, Gale lifts you over hurdles.
  2. Storm Walls and Frost Bridges. The puzzle part: read the colour, pick the weather. Reading kids get more out of it.
RushOrb stage map of The Thaw with locked stages and a Powder Run launch card67
  1. A map with locks. Stages open one by one, so there is always a natural stopping point.
  2. Three goals per stage. Reach the gate, light 3 beacons, hit the stage's own challenge. Each earns a spark.

The design decision we would defend at any school gate: every stage ends, so “one more level” has a real last level.

Parent questions about runner games, answered

Why is Subway Surfers rated 9+?

The App Store listing shows a 9+ rating and notes violence, advertising and loot boxes in its “Contains” line. Apple sets the rating from the developer's answers to a questionnaire, so it is a starting point, not a verdict on your child.

What makes a runner game “kid-friendly”?

Four things matter more than the theme: no ads that link out of the game, purchases that need your approval, no open chat with strangers, and sessions with an ending. Those four are what our ring checks above.

How do I stop surprise purchases in any game?

Two settings cover it. In Family Sharing, turn on Ask to Buy (Apple Support) so each purchase request comes to your phone. In Screen Time, set In-App Purchases to Don't Allow, as Apple's parental controls guide shows. Both work for RushOrb and Subway Surfers alike.

Is an endless runner bad for kids?

Not bad, just hard to stop. With no finish line, the natural end is a crash, which tends to mean “one more go”. Stage-based runners give you a clean place to say “last stage, then dinner”.

Can kids play RushOrb on a plane?

Yes. It plays fully offline with no account. Game Center leaderboards simply sync later.

Honest limits

Quick answers

Is RushOrb like Subway Surfers?

Partly. Both are fast 3D runners steered with a thumb. RushOrb adds a Weather Dial (Frost, Blaze, Gale) that changes the track, and it is built from 36 finite stages with a finish gate instead of one endless run.

What age is RushOrb for?

The App Store rates it 4+. In practice the Weather Dial asks for quick two-thumb decisions, so we think most kids enjoy it from about 6 or 7, and younger ones can still roll around the early stages of The Thaw.

Does RushOrb have ads?

No. There are no ads, no account and the game plays fully offline. The listing says coins are earned only by playing.

Can my child spend money in RushOrb?

Yes, if purchases are allowed on the device. There are cosmetic packs ($1.99 to $7.99) and an optional RushOrb Plus subscription ($2.99 monthly or $19.99 yearly). Purchases are for style and bonus rewards, never for clearing stages. Use Ask to Buy (Apple Support) so every request comes to you.

Is Subway Surfers okay for a 7-year-old?

That is your call. The App Store rates it 9+ and its listing notes advertising and loot boxes. If your child loves it and you have Apple Arcade, Subway Surfers+ removes the ads and in-app purchases.

Does RushOrb work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. The listing says full offline play, which makes it a fair pick for car rides and flights.

Does RushOrb collect my child's data?

Its App Store privacy label says Data Not Collected: the developer does not collect any data from the app.
