Is Apple Arcade worth it for kids?
Apple Arcade is worth it for kids when two or more children will play several different games for at least three months; for one child who mostly plays one game, a free game with no ads usually costs less. The membership is $6.99 a month and covers you plus up to five people, per Apple's Arcade page, checked in November 2026.
We make RushOrb, a free one-thumb weather adventure, so read this with that in mind. We would still pick Arcade for some families, and we say which ones below. The short version: Arcade buys variety and zero purchase prompts. A single free game buys one deep thing at no cost.
Cost per kid over the holidays
Black Friday (November 27, 2026) and new Christmas devices both push subscriptions. Put in your own numbers and see what Arcade costs per child, per month, and per hour of play.
Monthly plan only, at $6.99. The $49.99 yearly plan works out cheaper if you keep it for 8 months or more. We do not count Apple One bundles.
The quotable bit: a game subscription is cheap per hour and expensive per forgotten month. Most of the waste comes from months nobody opens it.
Apple Arcade vs a free game: questions parents ask
How much is Apple Arcade in 2026?
Apple's Arcade page lists $6.99 a month, and its FAQ also lists $49.99 a year. One membership can be shared with up to five other people through Family Sharing.
Is there a free trial of Apple Arcade?
Apple's page offers 3 months free with an eligible new device, counted from the day that device is activated. It also lists a 1-month Apple One trial for services you are not already using. Check the current terms on Apple's Arcade page before you buy.
Does Apple Arcade have ads or in-app purchases?
No. Apple's page says: no ads, no in-app purchases, no interruptions. That is the main reason many parents pick it.
Is RushOrb on Apple Arcade?
No. We make RushOrb and it is a separate free download on the App Store. It has no ads, but it does have optional purchases: cosmetic packs and the RushOrb Plus subscription.
Can my kid finish RushOrb without paying?
Yes. All 36 stages can be cleared with coins earned by playing. The listing says purchases are for style and bonus rewards, never for clearing stages.
When does Black Friday fall in 2026?
Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26). Game subscriptions rarely need a sale to make sense: the cost per kid matters more than the discount.
What the free option looks like
These are RushOrb's own store screenshots. Every stage on the map can be cleared without spending: coins come only from playing.

Honest limits of RushOrb
Arcade has no in-app purchases at all. RushOrb does. Here is the full list from the App Store listing in November 2026:
- RushOrb Plus Monthly, $2.99 · RushOrb Plus Yearly, $19.99
- Founder Bundle, $7.99 · Full World Pack, $2.99
- Cosmic Orb Pack, Trail Pack and Neon Orb Pack, $1.99 each
Plus adds a weekly exclusive orb, the two premium worlds, +50% XP and 2x coins. None of it is needed to finish. It is English only and needs iOS 18 or later. If purchase prompts of any kind worry you, turn on Ask to Buy in Family Sharing.
Who should pick Arcade instead
- Siblings with different tastes. Puzzle fan, racer and a toddler: Arcade covers all three for one price.
- Families who want zero purchase screens. Apple's Arcade page promises none.
- A new iPhone or iPad under the tree. Take the 3 free months, then decide in March.
And pick neither if the goal is less screen time over winter break. No subscription fixes that.
A quick holiday example
Say a family has two kids, ages 8 and 11, and a new iPad arrives on December 25. Arcade's 3 free months start when it is activated, so they run to late March. The 11-year-old plays most days; the 8-year-old drifts back to one favorite game. In March the parents look at Settings: two games got real use. They keep the free ones, cancel Arcade, and spend $0 instead of $6.99 a month. Another family, with three kids rotating through a dozen games, keeps it, and pays about $2.33 per kid per month.
The design decision we made for RushOrb: progress is never sold. You can buy a look for your orb, never a stage. That keeps the free path honest for kids who will never spend a cent.
Try the free path first
Download it, play Stage 1-1, and see if it holds their attention before you pay for anything.
