What are good math games for Christmas break?
The best math games for Christmas break take about ten minutes, have one clear goal like "make 10", and fit into what the day already holds: a car ride, baking, wrapping. You do not need a workbook. You need a slot, a game, and permission to skip Christmas Day.
Below is the whole break laid out by date, with one small game for each stretch.
A Christmas break math plan, day by day
School dates vary. Many US breaks run from about the weekend before Christmas into early January, so check your school's calendar and slide the plan to fit.
Last school day
Ask the teacher which facts are still wobbly. One sentence is enough to aim the whole break.
Sat Dec 19 – Sun Dec 20
Pick the ten-minute slot. After breakfast beats bedtime for most families.
Mon Dec 21
Make 10 with a deck of cards: face cards out, flip two, keep pairs that make ten.
Wed Dec 23
Bake and double a recipe. 2 eggs become 4, half a cup becomes a whole one.
Thu Dec 24, Christmas Eve
Gift-tag partners: write a number on each tag. The person opening it says its partner to 10.
Fri Dec 25, Christmas Day
No math. Really. A day off keeps the rest of the break friendly.
Sat Dec 26 – Wed Dec 30
One Number Beasts Daily Lab a day. It is a fresh puzzle each day, checked as solvable, and it works offline for travel.
Thu Dec 31, New Year's Eve
Count down from 20 by twos to midnight, or to whatever time bedtime really is.
Fri Jan 1, 2027
Beast Workshop: your child builds a board, the app proves it can be solved, and a cousin plays it from a short share code.
Night before school
Replay one easy stage for par. End the break on a win.
Ten minutes, most days, and a real day off: that is the whole plan.
Parents' questions about holiday math
What math games can we play over Christmas break?
Short ones with a clear goal: Make 10 with a deck of cards, doubling a cookie recipe, gift-tag partner numbers, a countdown by twos on New Year's Eve, and a make-10 puzzle app on travel days. Ten minutes is plenty.
How much math should kids do over winter break?
There is no official number. We suggest about ten minutes on most days, with real days off. Keeping the habit light matters more than the total.
What does make 10 mean?
Finding the partner that brings a number to ten, such as 7 and 3. It is a kindergarten standard in the US: Common Core K.OA.A.4 (2010) says children should, for any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to it.
Is Number Beasts free?
Yes. The App Store listing says no ads, no accounts, no tracking and no in-app purchases. Everything is stored on the device and the whole game works offline.
Will it work in the car or on a plane?
Yes. The game works fully offline, including the Daily Lab, which is made on the device each day.
Is the demo on this page the same as the app?
It is a simplified version of the Bond, Feed and Bridge rules. The app adds aiming, walls, mirrors, splitters and 45 handcrafted stages.
Honest limits
- Number Beasts practices adding to 10, 15 and 20, plus some plus, minus and times converters in the third world. It is not a full curriculum.
- It is on the App Store for iPhone. We do not make an Android version.
- Hero tools such as Bloop's rewind help, and any tool caps a stage at two stars. We built it that way so help is there without being the easy way out.
Who it is not for
If your child is still learning to count objects, start with real objects and a ten-frame first. If they already know bonds to 20 cold and want a challenge, the Chaos Laboratory world helps, but a strategy board game may suit them better.
What the demo leaves out
The puzzle above uses three of the game's real rules. Bond: exactly 10 pops a beast. Feed: fall short and it grows. Bridge: overshoot and the leftover keeps flying. In the app you also aim, bank off walls and plan for par, and with aim assist on the exact sum appears before you press Launch.
