Is a brain-games New Year's resolution worth making?
Yes, if you treat it as a small daily ritual you enjoy, not as a cure for forgetting things. The evidence for brain games protecting memory is thin, but a ten-minute puzzle you look forward to is one of the easiest resolutions to keep past January. Pick one puzzle, one time of day and one fallback for bad days.
Quotable: the best brain-games resolution is the one still running on March 7.
A January we have all had
Jan 1 You download three brain-training apps, set a 30-minute goal and do all of it. It feels great.
Jan 9 Work restarts. Two apps ask for a subscription. You do 12 minutes and feel behind.
Jan 23 A missed weekend turns into a missed week. The red streak counter makes it worse.
Feb 2 The resolution quietly ends. Nobody notices, including you.
The fix is boring on purpose: one puzzle, five to ten minutes, the same moment every day, with no penalty for a gap. That is the version this page helps you plan.
Which brain-games resolution should you pick? A comparison
Four common ways to keep a "use my brain more" resolution, compared on what they cost and what is actually known about them.
OptionCostDaily timeWhat the evidence says
Brain-training subscriptionUsually monthly or yearly10 to 20 minBig claims have been challenged: see the FTC's 2016 Lumosity settlement.
Paper crossword or sudokuNewspaper or book15 to 30 minEnjoyable; no proof it prevents decline.
Learning a new skillVaries30+ minNIA cites a study where learning quilting or digital photography improved memory more than socializing.
One daily number board (we make Sumbriska)Free core game; optional pass5 to 10 minA habit tool, not a treatment. We make no memory claims.
If you have 30 minutes and want the strongest evidence, learn a skill; if you have five, keep a puzzle.
Brain games resolution questions, answered
The questions people ask in the last week of December, grouped so you can skip to yours.
Getting started
When should I start? January 1 is fine, but starting on a quiet day in late December lets you find your time slot before work restarts.
What time of day works? Attach it to something you already do: first coffee, the train, the kettle. A cue you never skip beats an alarm.
Keeping it going
Should I track a streak? Only if gaps will not discourage you. Sumbriska's listing describes XP levels and Tide Orders, not a streak counter, and hints never cost XP.
What is my bad-day fallback? One board from the Daily set, two minutes, then stop. It still counts.
Picking the puzzle
Why a number puzzle? The rules take a minute and the boards reward careful, unhurried thinking, which suits a calm ritual better than a timed speed test.
Can it get harder later? Yes: The Deep is an endless run of boards, and Two Tides boards make one layout solve two schedules at once.
Is doing a puzzle every day a good New Year's resolution?
It is a good resolution if you want a small, pleasant daily ritual that you can actually keep. It is a weak resolution if the real goal is to prevent memory loss: the National Institute on Aging (page reviewed June 2024) says there is not enough evidence that commercial brain-training apps have that effect.
How long does it take for a daily puzzle to become a habit?
In Lally and colleagues (European Journal of Social Psychology, 2010), people took a median of 66 days to make a new daily behavior feel automatic, with a range of 18 to 254 days. Start on January 1 and the median lands on March 7, 2027.
What if I miss a day in January?
Keep going. The same 2010 study found that missing one opportunity did not materially affect how the habit formed. Skipping a whole week is a different story, so plan a fallback board you can do in two minutes.
Do brain games make you smarter?
Do not count on it. In 2016 the FTC settled with Lumosity over ads claiming its games improved work and school performance and delayed cognitive decline; the FTC said the company lacked the science to back those claims. Play because you enjoy it.
Which brain games are free with no subscription?
Sumbriska's free download includes regions 1 and 2, the Daily board, The Deep and Harbor Run, with no ads. The Voyage Pass ($4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, no free trial) adds regions 3 to 6, side boards, Gale Run and premium cosmetics.
How many minutes a day should a brain-games resolution take?
Pick an amount you could manage on your worst day of January, usually five to ten minutes. A resolution that needs 30 free minutes tends to collapse the first busy week.
Can my kids do the resolution with me?
Yes. Sumbriska has child profiles with no purchases and no links, and the adult area sits behind a PIN or Face ID. A shared daily board makes a nice family check-in over winter break.
Honest limits
- No brain game, including ours, is proven to prevent memory loss or dementia. The National Institute on Aging (page reviewed June 2024) says the evidence for commercial brain-training apps is not there.
- Free covers regions 1 and 2, the Daily board, The Deep and Harbor Run. Regions 3 to 6, side boards and Gale Run need the Voyage Pass ($4.99 a month or $29.99 a year, no free trial).
- The listing does not describe a streak counter or reminders, so the "same time every day" part is up to you.
- iPhone only on this page. If you want words rather than numbers, a daily crossword is the better pick.
One design decision we made: hints, Undo and step explanations never cost XP. A resolution dies when the tool makes you feel bad for asking for help.
Make it a habit with Number Puzzles
Download on a quiet evening this December, solve one Daily board, and make it a habit with Number Puzzles from January 1. The core game stays free.
