What are good micro break ideas at work?

A good micro break matches what is actually tired: look far away for tired eyes, stand and walk for a stiff body, and do one small task that ends for a scattered head. Keep it under ten minutes, and finish it on purpose rather than when a feed lets you go.

Pick the break for the part of you that is tired, not the one that is easiest to reach.

What the research says about micro breaks

a 2022 meta-analysis in PLOS ONE pooled studies of breaks of ten minutes or less. Micro breaks gave a small lift in vigor and a small drop in fatigue. The boost to performance was small overall and only showed up on less demanding tasks, such as clerical or creative work.

Micro breaks reliably help you feel better; they are not a productivity hack.

The 3:10 p.m. scroll

You finish a spreadsheet, pick up your phone "for a second", and fourteen minutes later you are reading comments under a video you did not choose. You come back more tired than you left.

The problem was never the break. It was a break with no last page. Swap the feed for something that ends and you get the pause without the drift.

Who a puzzle break is not for

  • Tired eyes. Another screen is the wrong fix. Look out of a window instead.
  • Aching back or legs. Stand up and walk; a puzzle keeps you seated.
  • Deep, draining work. The 2022 review suggests you may need more than ten minutes.
  • People who hate numbers. Pick a word game or a sketchbook; the point is a finish line.

How a Sumthread break works, in 3 steps

  1. Read the targets. Each board shows ordered Target Sums at the top, such as 12, then 11, then 10.
  2. Trace one thread. Drag through every tile, up, down, left or right, no diagonals, no revisits.
  3. Lock the checkpoints. When your running sum hits the active target, the tile locks with an amber ring and the next segment starts from zero.

Starter Threads are 3×3 boards; the Morning Break collection is 3×4 boards designed for a short pause. Leave mid-path and Sumthread saves your exact step.

One design decision behind the break

We built the Clean Weave seal for boards finished with zero hints and zero undos, but we did not add a timer to the core boards. A clock turns a break into another deadline. The limit we kept: Sumthread is iPhone only and has one Daily Thread a day, so it is not an all-afternoon game, and we think that is right for a break.

Micro break questions

What counts as a micro break?

Researchers usually mean a pause of ten minutes or less taken during the workday. The 2022 PLOS ONE meta-analysis by Albulescu and colleagues used that definition.

Do micro breaks actually help?

They help how you feel more clearly than how much you get done. The 2022 meta-analysis found small but significant boosts in vigor and drops in fatigue; the overall effect on performance was small and not statistically significant.

What is a good micro break for tired eyes?

Look away from the screen. Mayo Clinic suggests the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. A phone puzzle is the wrong break for tired eyes.

Is playing a game on my phone a real break?

It can be, if it ends. A single puzzle board with a clear finish gives your attention somewhere else to go and then hands it back. An endless feed rarely does.

How often should I take a micro break?

There is no single number. Many people pair the 20-20-20 eye rule with standing up roughly once an hour. The meta-analysis found that harder, more draining work may need breaks longer than ten minutes.

Is Sumthread free?

Sumthread's listing describes five puzzle collections, a Daily Thread and five board themes, with no ads, no account and no third-party tracking. It plays fully offline.
